  • Know the relevant health and safety legislation and industry good practice when working on site in a single or multi-occupancy dwelling/building
  • Know how to implement safe site working practices when working to connect fibre cables in or to single and multi-occupancy dwellings including buildings

SA020 Working Safely in Single & Multi-Occupancy Dwellings Inc. Buildings Course Content

You will be assessed, via your theory test, on the following criteria:

  • Outline the regulatory requirements for correctly storing tools, equipment and materials whilst on site and when they are removed from site
  • Outline the regulatory requirements for using approved access equipment
  • State when a work site is safe for work to proceed or to leave when work finishes
  • Outline your legal responsibilities for health and safety as required by the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Electricity at Work Regulations appropriate to site working
  • State CDM and its requirements
  • Define the importance of the need for safety, welfare and access arrangements to be enforced at the site
  • Outline the requirements for use, care and storage of substances covered by COSHH
  • State the importance of “housekeeping” procedures in relation to site working
  • State the importance of following correct procedures to minimise damage to property, fabric and equipment
  • Outline the implication/impact of the Building Regulations (England and Wales) on safe site working
  • Outline how to assess that the site is safe to start work
  • State how you monitor site working conditions to ensure safety at work
  • Explain the requirements for warning notices and barriers to prevent unauthorised entry
  • Explain the requirements and use of tools used for installing fibre connection into single and multi-occupancy dwellings, including buildings
  • Describe and confirm a programme of work which is safe and practical in accordance with the identified category of telecommunications installation work to be undertaken
  • State when it is appropriate to use approved access equipment on the work site
  • Explain the importance of checking tools, equipment, and materials on completion of work
  • Explain the importance of checking the work site is cleared after the work ends and is left in a safe and satisfactory condition in accordance with health and safety regulations and good housekeeping practice
  • Explain the considerations prior to installing a cab le into a dwelling
  • Explain the considerations prior to working in single or multiple dwellings and buildings
  • State how to safely handle and dispose fibre off cuts
  • Outline the requirements for agreeing the installation of cable and equipment with the property owner
  • State the factors involved in selecting telecommunications cables, drop tubes and associated equipment to meet fire safety requirement
  • Describe how to carry out drilling activities safely and without damaging the property
  • Outline the key factors to be considered before drilling into a building
  • State the materials for stopping fire spreading quickly within a dwelling or building
  • Explain the systems for fire stopping when taking cables through walls
  • Outline the requirements of cables used internally in a dwelling
  • Explain the key factors to consider in installing external cables to the fabric of the building
  • State the requirements for use of internal cables
  • Explain the role of Competent Person, Qualified Supervisor, Responsible Person and Principal Duty Holder
  • Demonstrate how to operate access equipment correctly and according to suppliers’ instructions
  • Can ensure tools equipment and materials are removed from site and stored safely and securely
  • Demonstrate good manual handling techniques
  • Carry out prework tools and equipment checks
  • Take safety precautions before drilling
  • Carry out drilling activities safely and without damaging the property
  • Carry out safe installation of external cables to the fabric of the building
  • Carry out fire stopping by using approved and authorised materials
  • Check and use ladders safely and work safely on ladders and steps
  • Check the work site is cleared after the work ends and is left in a safe and satisfactory condition in accordance with health and safety

The course includes a multiple-choice theory assessment.

Certification

This Smart Awards certificate is valid for 3 years, you will then need to complete the course again or attend a refresher course if available, to renew your qualification.

NOPS Card

Entry Requirements

This qualification is available to anyone over the age of 16 years old. There are no formal entry requirements and Smart Awards will not restrict access on the grounds of prior academic attainment, age, employment, geographic location or any other grounds.

There are no barriers that restrict access or progression, thereby promoting equality. It is expected however, that learners will have a level of literacy adequate to cope with both the theory and practical assessments.
