NRSWA Courses in Gillingham, Kent
The NRSWA Unite O1 course is held at the training venue in Gillingham, Kent. Located just off Junction 4 of the M2, the venue is conveniently close to local amenities and major routes across Kent, including Maidstone via the M20 and A229, Canterbury via the A2 and M2, and Tunbridge Wells via the A21 and M25.
Gillingham Railway Station is just a 12-minute taxi ride from the venue. Free on-site parking is available, with a request to reverse park for safety purposes. A café within the business park is available for lunch.
We offer NRSWA Streetworks courses for operatives and supervisors, including reassessments, ensuring the skills and knowledge for safe, efficient streetworks.
Whether you need to carry out the manual excavation and reinstatement of footpaths and highways or be qualified to oversee the works, these courses will give you the right certification to carry out work under the New Roads and Street Works Act. The NRSWA Reassessment course can be taken at any time before your certificates expire and up to 5 years after your expiry.

What to expect from your course
On your Operative Signing, Lighting and Guarding course in Gillingham, you will be taught how to:
- Produce a plan of an intended site showing the position of signs, guarding and traffic signals. The plan must include all relevant distances, sizes, and dimensions required.
- Produce a list of equipment for the intended site.
- Position, test, adjust, commission and decommission temporary traffic signals.
- Conduct the activities safely wearing the appropriate safety wear.
Equipment to bring on the day
You will be learning on a live site during your course. Therefore, you will be required to wear protective clothing. Requirements vary by location, and some centres can be more accommodating but typically you are required to bring:
- Fluorescent Jacket Long-sleeve
- Overalls/Work Clothes (shorts not allowed)
- Gloves
- Safety Boots
- Waterproof Clothing
- Hard Hat

What is NRSWA?
The NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act 1991) exists to ensure safety and correct practice when carrying out any work on roads, highways and footpaths. It is there to minimise risk to both workers and the public. It is an act of legislation (a law or set of laws passed by Parliament). The qualifications required for operatives to undertake streetworks was updated in 2016. In the NRSW Act itself, there are lots of practical guidance given for the efficient co-ordination, ensuring safety and minimising disruption and inconvenience to the general public using the road or pavement.
