SA004 Abrasive Wheels Course Content

You will be assessed, via your theory and practical assessments, on the following criteria:

  • Work safely at all times and comply with regulations, directives and guidelines with regards to H&S
  • Follow correct specifications and determine what has to be done and how the machine will be set to achieve this
  • Mount and set the required work-holding devices, work piece and cutting tools
  • Set the machine tool operative parameters to achieve the component specification
  • Check all the safety mechanisms are in place and equipment is set correctly for the work required
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that you cannot solve
  • Know the specific safety precautions to be taken when setting up work-holding devices and grinding wheels
  • Your duties and responsibilities under ‘The Abrasive Wheels Regulations’
  • The hazards associated with setting and operating grinding machines
  • How to start and stop the machine: in normal and emergency situations
  • The importance of ensuring that the machine is isolated from the power supply before mounting grinding wheels and work-holding devices
  • The importance of keeping your work area clean and tidy and wearing the appropriate PPE
  • Basic operation of various grinding machines and the typical operations hey can perform
  • How to handle and store grinding wheels safely and correctly
  • Terminology used in relation to the activities
  • The range of work-holding methods and devices used on grinding machines
  • Methods of mounting and setting a workpiece in or on the work-holding devices and the tools and equipment that can be used for this
