IOSH Managing Safely Refresher Course Content

The refresher course is split into 6 modules, recapping lessons from the Managing Safely course, in addition to building upon these lessons with updated information. The final focus for this refresher course is the health and safety management system: plan, do, check and act.

Thinking Back – you will reflect on the lessons you took away from your full IOSH Managing Safely course, and revisit key reasons for managing and supervising safely. Refresh your knowledge on some key terms using engaging and inclusive teaching methods.

Leadership – revisit why leadership and management is important, how that can impact the health and safety culture and attitudes throughout your organisation.
Refresh your knowledge on the 4 C’s, the essentials to good practise.

Plan – take a look at health and safety policy and what it includes, how should you deliver this within your organisation, and how to use an effective management system to control risk, react to change, respond to emergencies and meet legal requirements.

Do – undertake the risk assessment exercise, think about and discuss the best ways to communicate your findings from the risk assessment along with the health and safety plan to your workforce. What needs to be done to implement the plan.

Check – recap the check stage, take a look at possible data types, what can be measures, and how can that help in seeing if your plan is implemented, if it’s working well.

Act – you will look at why reviewing performance, acting on lessons and focusing on continual improvement is essential. Reflect on what you have learned and how you can use that in your workplace.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the questions we frequently get asked about our Managing Safely training course.

Can I attend the virtual IOSH Managing Safely course on a smart phone?

As the IOSH Managing Safely course is a 3-day course, we do not allow delegates to complete the course on a smart phone. The smaller screen size will make following the tutor difficult over 3 days, as well as getting involved in the interactive activities and completing the assessment. If you do not have access to any device other than a smart phone, then a classroom-based course or our e-learning course might be a better option for you. Contact one of our team to discuss what your options are.

Can IOSH courses be run on-site?

Our IOSH Working and Managing Safely courses can be run on your site or a location convenient for you. They are accredited by IOSH wherever the location as the training will be provided by one of our expert trainers. Call the PSS training team on 0800 0213 263 today for a quote, if you have a group of delegates this is the most cost-effective and convenient way to get your staff trained.

How long will my IOSH certificate take to arrive?

IOSH certificates are now provided electronically via the IOSH portal. It takes approximately 2 weeks for the certificates to be put onto your portal. You can request a paper copy from IOSH at an extra cost.

Maximum delegates on an IOSH course?

IOSH allow a maximum of 20 delegates per course, however, to get the most out of training we recommend having no more than 12 delegates. If you would like a group trained we can accommodate any group size up to 20.

What happens if I fail the IOSH Managing Safely assessment?

You can retake a different multi-format assessment paper and/or a new risk assessment project, this is usually within 20 working days of the original assessment.

Do I have to take the Managing Safely Refresher within X amount of years after completing my Managing Safely course?

The rules for the Managing Safely Refresher have changed, you no longer have to take the refresher within 3 years of your course as there is no expiry date to your Managing Safely. However, IOSH recommend that managers complete the refresher course every 3 years, as this will keep your knowledge fresh and up-to-date.
