What is the Level 2 Award in Air Blown Fibre Open Course?
An Open Course is in a classroom in a face-to-face environment. These courses have regular dates available to book online or by phone. This 3-day course is for learners to develop an insight into the concepts involved with the installation of micro ducts and sub ducts, preblowing checks, blowing in fibre bundles (approximately 1mm – 2.5mm 2, 4, 8, 12,24 fibre units). Unit 204 is one of the 3 optional units to complete the level 2 full award.
To achieve the full award, you will need to complete the mandatory unit (unit 201), plus one other optional unit (202, 203 or 204).
Although this is a practical course, you will complete the unit in a controlled environment within a training workshop.
Who is the course for?
This course is aimed at delegates who wish to gain an understanding of the concepts involved with the installation of micro ducts/sub ducts. You will also cover risk assessments and other safety requirements as well as the knowledge carry out functional pre-blowing checks. How to operate blowing equipment and ancillary machinery will also be covered within this unit.

Level 2 Award in Air Blown Fibre Course Details
On receiving payment for your City & Guilds 3668-02 units, an email with your ‘course joining instructions’ is sent to you.
This document includes the following details:
- Your chosen course date (or dates depending on the units you choose)
- Course start time at your chosen venue
- Address of your chosen venue, including a map screenshot
- Details of what to do if you need any special requirements to complete the course, such as a physical disability or a learning or reading difficulty
You need to bring photographic ID, such as a driving licence or passport with you.
Lunch is not included, so please provide your own.
Level 2 Award in Air Blown Fibre Course Content
1. Carry out risk assessments and safety checks when using air blown fibre machines
- Conduct a risk assessment prior to working with air compressors and installation of micro ducts.
- Conduct safety checks when operating compressors, electrical and hydraulic driven blowing machines.
2. Construct a micro ducted link prior to blowing fibres
- Build an end to end blowing link for the size of the fibre unit being blown in.
- Use differing types of micro duct and sub duct assemblies and interconnecting devices.
- Store and handle micro duct and sub duct assemblies.
3. Use direct buried methods of trenching to manufacturer’s recommendations
- Identify methods of trenching.
- Back-fill trenches to manufacturer’s recommendations.
4. Use various methods of installation and troubleshooting measures for directly installing into ducts
- Carry out methods of installation.
- Use troubleshooting measures when carrying out direct installation into ducts.
5. Connect micro ducts into tube bundles assemblies and tube distribution closures (TDC)
- Select tube bundles assemblies.
- Connect microducts into tube bundles assemblies.
- Interconnect tube distribution closures (TDC).
6. Conduct pre-blowing pressure and continuity testing
- Carry out airflow and pressure testing.
- Conduct continuity testing.
7. Install blown fibre bundles into tubes
- Operate blowing machines.
- Connect to appropriate control box mechanisms.
- Blow in fibre and cables.

Timed practical assessments set by your trainer on the different elements of the course content.
Certification
You will be awarded a digital certificate on successful completion of this course. However, you will need to complete the mandatory unit (201) to be awarded the full award.
