What is the City & Guilds Award in Initial Verification Open Course?
An Open Course is in a classroom in a face-to-face environment. These courses have regular dates available to book online or by phone.

The 5-day City & Guilds 2391-50 Level 3 Award in Initial Verification of Electrical Installations has been developed by City & Guilds to replace their 2394 course starting in 2017. It has been designed to meet the specific needs of the electrical installation industry and will teach you how to carry out an initial inspection on electrical installations.
Who is the course for?
This course is ideal for practising electricians who wish to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to carry out Initial verification on single and three-phase electrical installations with formal, accredited certification.

City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Initial Verification Course Details
On receiving payment for your City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Initial Verification, an email with your ‘course joining instructions’ is sent to you.
This document includes the following details:
- Your chosen course date (or dates depending on the units you choose)
- Course start time at your chosen venue
- Address of your chosen venue, including a map screenshot
- Details of what to do if you need any special requirements to complete the course, such as a physical disability or a learning or reading difficulty
You need to bring photographic ID, such as a driving licence or passport with you.
Lunch is not included, so please provide your own.
City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Initial Verification
1. Understand the requirements for initial verification of electrical installations
- State the situations that require initial verification
- State the purpose of initial verification
- Identify the statutory and non-statutory documents that effect the initial verification process
- Identify information required by an inspector in order to carry out initial verification in accordance with BS 7671/GN 3
- Describe the purpose of certificating documents and the requirements for recording and retention in accordance with BS 7671
- Define the responsibilities of the relevant signatories in relation to certification
2. Understand safety management procedures when undertaking initial verification of electrical installations
- Identify health and safety requirements which apply when carrying out initial verification
- Outline the relevant requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations (EWR) for safe inspection and testing of electrical installation
- Describe the procedure for completing safe isolation in accordance with HSE guidance
- Explain why safe isolation is carried out for the protection of the inspector and other persons
- Identify the implications of not carrying out safe isolation
3. Understand the requirements for the initial inspection of an electrical installation
- State why inspection is carried out before testing
- Identify the items to be inspected during initial verification in accordance with the schedule of inspections for new installations
- Explain how the items on the Schedule of Inspections would be verified
- Describe the appropriate human sense required for a particular inspection
- Describe how to deal with an item that is found unsatisfactory during the inspection process
- Describe how the IP classification system is used for electrical equipment
4. Understand the requirements for testing electrical installations at initial verification
- State the reasons for instruments to be maintained and comply with standards such as BS 7671 and GS38
- Describe the characteristics of instruments and leads used for each test
- Explain why there is a recommended test sequence for initial verification
- Explain the purpose of each test
- Describe how each test is carried out
- Identify factors that affect the result of each test
- Interpret the result of each test
- Explain how test results are verified for compliance
5. Perform inspection and testing of electrical installations
- Establish a safe system of work appropriate to initial verification
- Carry out the relevant safe isolation procedure in accordance with HSE guidance
- Carry out an initial inspection in accordance with BS 7671 and IET Guidance Note 3
- Complete a schedule of inspections in accordance with BS 7671 and IET Guidance Note 3
- Carry out tests in accordance with BS 7671 and IET Guidance Note 3
- Verify test results for compliance
- Complete documentation in accordance with BS 7671 and IET Guidance Note 3

Assessment and Certification
At the end of the course, you will be required to complete a test that consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. You will be given 30 minutes to complete the assessment and you will need to get 25 out of 30 marks to pass the test.
You will receive a digital certificate usually within 2 weeks of completing your course.
What happens if I fail the CITB Health and Safety Awareness Assessment?
In the event that delegates fail a CITB assessment paper and they qualify to do a re-sit assessment, the assessment paper can ONLY be taken on the same day.
Entry Requirements
