What is the CITB SMETS

The CITB Site Management Environmental Training Scheme (SMETS) eLearning course is specifically tailored for site managers and aspiring professionals in the field. Expand your understanding of environmental management and legislation within the context of UK construction sites.

This course, sometimes referred to as CITB site management safety training scheme, will prepare you for managing the environmental aspects of a construction site by helping you put into practice your legal, moral and social responsibilities.

What does the eLearning course include?

Assessment and Certification

At the end of the course, you will be required to complete a exam that consists of 25 questions. You will be given 30 minutes to complete the exam and you will need to get 24 marks out of 30 marks to pass the exam.

  • 22 questions are worth 1 mark
  • 1 question is worth 2 marks
  • 2 questions are worth 3 marks
  • You will need valid photographic ID (a passport or UK/EU driving licence)

On successful completion of your course, you will receive a digital certificate, which will be valid for 5 years.

What happens if I fail the CITB SMETS assessment?

You will be presented with your options for reassessment on the CITB e-learning platform.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, although you will need a good understanding of spoken and written English. This course is aimed at those who are construction site managers or aspiring to be.

What’s the difference between virtual and elearning?

Elearning courses are made up of course materials that you read, listen to and watch. Our virtual courses are more like classroom courses except you are viewing your tutor and the presentation on your screen. You learn alongside other delegates, take part in group activities and discussions, share stories and situations from your workplace and get advice from your tutor and classmates. Elearning you learn at your own pace, choosing to do it all at once, an hour at a time however you like, virtual courses have set times just like a classroom course.

What ID can I use for my CITB course?

When you attend a CITB Site Safety Plus course you need provide a form of photographic ID such as:
  • Passport: A valid passport of any nationality of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
  • Photo Card Driving Licence: A valid UK only driving licence with a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
  • Non UK Driving Licence: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
  • Work ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date (if applicable) and refer to the delegates present employer
  • EU Country ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date
  • CITB Scheme Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date. Acceptable CITB Scheme cards include CSCS, CPCS, CISRS
  • Student ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate, as well as year of study (e.g. 2018/2019 or expiration date and name of the institution of study) – must be no more than 6 months out of date
  • Citizen Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate and be no more than 6 months out of date
  • Proof of Age Card: Cards issued nationally in the UK by VALIDATE UK, bearing the PASS hologram bearing a photograph of the delegate
  • Young Scots Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date
  • British Armed Forces Card/Veterans Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate and for an employee or former employee of the Armed Forces only (not a dependent or spouse) – must be no more than 6 months out of date
If a delegate does not hold any of the above ID documents they will need to complete a waiver form.
