What Is A CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course?

So you are considering joining the construction or civil engineering industry? Having a CITB health and safety awareness course is a first step towards being safe to work on the majority of construction sites in the UK. If you are wondering what the course is about and who it is designed for, then read on.

Every year, thousands of people trying to get their CSCS labourer study this 1 day safety course.

In fact, it is one of the fundamental courses that are required in many occupations within the construction and civil engineering industry.

We are going to look at some basic information about the course and why it is a beneficial qualification to have.

What Does The CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course Cover?

The CITB health and safety awareness course offers a solid understanding of UK health and safety law, accident prevention and risk assessments in addition to realising how your role fits into the wider need for safety awareness in the workplace.

It is aimed at those who have begun, or are about to start, work as a labourer or if you want to pursue employment in a health and safety capacity on construction sites. It offers an important understanding of workplace safety and why it is so important.

What Are the Entry Requirements?

The great thing about this course is that there are very little entry requirements! If you can read, write and speak the English language enough to understand the content of the course, you can take the 1-day course.

As an individual you don’t need to have any previous health and safety experience or even know what a risk assessment is. There is no need to be experienced in the construction industry to take this training and for many people, it is the first step towards getting a new job.

Do You Have to Complete a Test on the Health and Safety Awareness Course?

In a word, yes. There is a short test at the end of the course. There aren’t many people who actually like doing tests and exams so the course doesn’t focus heavily on an examination but you will need to pass the test to get your certificate.

Don’t worry though because everything that is on the test is covered on the day of the course itself. There won’t be any big surprises that are designed to catch you out.

Benefits of Taking a CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course

The course will allow you to enhance your health and safety knowledge and practical skills especially if you are in and around construction sites. It is often the first step to getting your CSCS green card. In order to gain your CSCS green card you need to pass both this course and the Health Safety & Environment Test.

It is also required if you are going to take a CPCS plant course to earn your trained operator card.

You can take the course for as little as £115, and it is also possible to book to attend this course virtually online or even onsite if you have a group. If you pass the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course, then you not only open doors to finding employment but you can gain valuable skills to use in your existing job too.
